EEE PC 1000h – Four Months On…

January 26th, 2009 | Posted By: Tim | Filed under: Hardware |

Well its been roughly 4 months since I’ve had my EEE PC 1000h, and I must say the little thing has been amazing.

Not only does the unit get a workout from myself, writing my book, adding blog posts (like this one right now!), surfing the web, traveling to friends house and much more, but my girlfriends laptop is starting to die in a horrible, horrible way.

The Toshiba A70 is starting to give up the ghost.

Her laptop is starting to shutdown after about 15 – 45 mins of work depending on the heat of the day, it also seems that Toshiba in their infinite wisdom decided that the bottom fans on the A70 series should SUCK IN rather than BLOW OUT like most fans should do to extract heat.

I’ve stripped the laptop down so many times to discover a matchbox sized wad of dust, hair and other assortments of material that clogs the heat pipe and causes the thing to overheat.

So thats where the EEE PC has come in really handy.

Now I give it a run for its money with use, but my girlfriend really makes the little PC earn its keep, YouTube, Facebook, Myspace, LiveJournal and more, and they are usually all open at once and all switched between, that and Pidgin working overtime with her talking to a bunch of friends.

Its this kind of use that I’m amazed at, once fully charged the EEE PC 1000h just keeps on kicking, even once its down to 5% of battery it still has at least 10 mins of work time, find me a laptop that will sucessfully boot with 5% of its battery left and keep running for 10 mins, I don’t think you could.

Another amazing feature is its 802.11n wireless reception, it has a greater distance of reception than almost any laptop I have seen, and its amazing setting it to profile and driving for 10 minutes in a car, even at 60kms it flawlessly picks up the networks as they pass by.

It’s been nothing but a joy to use, sure it won’t run the latest games but who needs that from an ultra-portable device? I’ve got my iPhone for that…

Talking about Apple products, I’ve been considering putting OS X on the little beast, I’ll need to get a usb external cd drive to do it but the advantages are clear, having the cheapest solution for an OS X enabled portable computer appeals to me.

If anyone out there has a good experience with an EEE PC or for that matter any Netbook drop a comment on the post!

You can get some decent instructions for instlling OSX on the 1000h from the article I wrote on my site (http://www.enik.ch/2008/10/osx-leopard-1055-on-the-eee-1000h) or on the excellent community site (http://ipis-osx.wikidot.com/)

Don’t hesitate to contact me if you run into problems.

    Cheers,

    Nik

Hey there Nik, thanks for the tip!

I’ve been considering it for a while, especially since I have an iMac as well, it would help for the connectivity.

I can’t wait to check out the communities!

WOW did you enter orbit? 60 kilometres per second is booking it. (pedantic geek here)

I am sure you meant 60 km/h right?

edit: Updated as per next comment

@Chris – Lol, Kms is the way we shorten Kilometers not Kilometers per second, if it was that fast then I would have written it as 60 Kps!

Still if my EEE PC could pick up Wifi at 60 Kilometers per second I wouldn’t be complaining!
