Why are people these days so inconsiderate?

February 8th, 2009 | Posted By: Tim | Filed under: Rants |

These days in this fast paced world we are all rushing around and trying to get things done in a timely fashion.

But does this mean that we have no time for common decency or consideration for others?

There I was, walking out of a local supermarket, full shopping trolley, lots of people around.

And then it happens. The person who is walking directly in front of me stops, doesn’t move to the side, nor apologizes for blocking my path, no she just stops there.

Even when I politely ask for her to move out of the way… nope didn’t even budge.

Are we living in an ever increasing world of inconsideration?

I see this all the time, walking down the street, driving my car, hell even talking to people can be painful sometimes, but is there any need to be rude?

Hell no! and its this type of attitude that is starting to totally permeate our culture.

Gone are the days where you would not only tip you hat to stranger, the times would give a helping hand to your fellow person in need, but also are gone the days of being able to live in a society that you can trust to be aware of the needs of others.

There are glimmers of the old ways I do see sometimes, they are few and far between but I do see them, a person helping a little old lady with a can on a high shelf in a supermarket, a kind person helping out a homeless person with food or shelter, but all it comes down to is the mentality of “If I don’t see it, then I don’t care” and second to that the sentiment that “Money can make any problem go away”.

It almost sickens me to think that this is the way that the modern world is turning, they used to say that “No man is an Island” well I’m about to update it:

No person is an Island, unless they have enough cash to pay people to not care

Unfortunately this is something that I think can only become more and more prevelent today.

Anyone else come across acts of selfishness (or kindness) in day to day life?

People do this everywhere. Why do people in the supermarket park their cart across the aisle while they read the ingredients on a soup can? Isn’t it obvious that nobody can get by them? Sure it is…but why would they care?

I blame parenting in the last 20-30 years… more parents spend time working now and less time parenting and kids learn nothing about manners. Then these manner-less kids become parents and the spiral spins on…
